Founded originally by the Phoenicians, followed by the Romans, this area has a good 25 nuraghes and other interesting archeological sites spread out along 35 km of coast, thus boasting one of the most important cultural traditions of the island.
A “must see” is the famous house museum of Sa Domu ‘e Farra (house of flour), a typical ancient agricultural Campidanese dwelling with an open gallery and various rooms, about 40, containing many articles and tools used by the local families until recently. Also of interest is a visit to the S. Pietro di Ponte, the S. Maria Cepola (17th century) and the S. Efisio churches. In the central Azuni Square you will find the Sant’Agata church. Along the coast are a number of beaches. Among those connected to Poetto of Cagliari, are the Quartu beach and the seaside resorts of Foxi, Margine Rosso, Sant’Andrea, Flumini and Is Mortorius. Going in the direction of Villasimius is the not to be missed Cala Regina with its Spanish tower and the Mari Pintao beach. For those who love beautiful panoramas, a visit to Capo Boi (to the east) is recommended, where the magnificent Carbonara Gulf can be admired.
Just inland, nearby the town of Quartucciu, a good road leads to Is Concias – S. Pietro in Paradise, near Seven Brothers Mountain, where the tombs of the giants are located, Sa Domu ‘e S’Orcu (ogre’s house), among the most interesting of their kind in Sardinia. Again, in the town of Selargius is the beautiful S. Giuliano church (11th-12th century). Here the annual Settimana Selargina traditional festival is held. This is a mass in the campidanese language during which a wedding takes place between two young people dressed in local costumes. Finally, in the Sestu locality are the S. Giorgio church of the 16th Century in gothic style and the Romanesque S. Gemiliano rural church of the 13th Century.
