VILLAPUTZU

Probably of ancient nuraghic foundation, Villaputzu’s major representation is in the areas of Cala Murtas and Quirra, where in the wild, rocky environment small beaches are squeezed between rocks and Mediterranean vegetation. The Torre di Murtas, dated the end of the 17th Century, is among the best preserved towers of the area. In the Quirra area is the castle of Count Carroz (12th Century), and the S. Nicola church (13th Century), a rare example of a late Romanesque building in baked ceramics. About 4 km. From Villaputzu is the tourist location of Porto Corallo with a beautiful marina with places for about 400 boats and a lovely beach, which is overlooked by a Spanish tower. A few kilometres away are the remains of the Castle of Gibas. Also of interest in the area is the agricultural-pastoral centre of Armungia, famous for being the birth place of the politician and writer Emilio Lussu (1890-1975) the town developed around an ancient nuraghe (1500-1400 B.C.), which still dominates over the town, where the S. Michele Arcangelo church and the S’Omu de is aina Museum (the house of tools) which contains a small collection of tools for agricultural, sheep raising, craftsmen, hunters, as wells as those for domestic use. There is also a collection of photographs dedicated to Emilio Lussu.
