OROSEI

Capital town of the Baronia

At about 40 km from Nuoro, Orosei is the historical capital town of the Baronia, erected on the Roman site Fanun Carisi. The historical center preserves Sant’Antonio Abate Sanctuary (14th-15th cent.), along with the romanesque Pisan Tower, S.giacomo Maggiore Parish (17th-18th cent.) Santa Croce (17th cent.), Chiesa del Rosario (17th cent.) and Chiesa Delle Anime (18th cent.), whose dome is tiled with majolica. Along the left bank of the Cedrino river there is the little S.Maria a Mare church (13th cent.) where every year on 30th May the province’s most joyful festival in Mary’s honour takes place. North-east of Orosei there is one of Sardinia’s most important sanctuaries, Madonna del Rimedio, rebuilt at the end of the 9th century over thr previous 8th century building. Heading towards Galtelli you reach the remains of Castello di Pontes (11th cent.) surrounded by ancient welcome-centres called cumbessias. In Galtelli you may visit the Santissimo Crocefisso Parish church, and Museo Etnografico. South of Orosei lye the beaches of Marina Di Orosei-Osalla, behind them the ponds of Cedrino. At about 11km towards Siniscola, a detour leads you to Cala Liberotto, Cala Ginepro, Bidderosa, Berchida and Capo Comino, Sardinia’s most eastern side.
